David McGuinn, a 42-year old father was murdered late Tuesday by inmates at the Maryland House of Corrections.
Officer McGuinn was performing his evening count around 10:00 pm when the inmates unexpectedly exited their cells and stabbed him multiple times.
Inmates Lamar C. Harris and Lee E. Stephens have been charged in the killing.
More than 400 officers, friends and relatives gathered at the Maryland House of Corrections in Jessup for a candlelight vigil honoring the officer stabbed to death last week by two inmates.
"He was our brother," prison chaplain Jim Sanders said. "We are all hurting. We've come here tonight not only to say a prayer for David and his family, but also to heal ourselves."
Sgt. Sharon James, who worked with McGuinn at Jessup, remembered him as a man full of joy. "Even to the end, he was still strong," she said. "McGuinn was a very happy person, always smiling. . . . That was McGuinn."
Nearly 2,000 people gathered in a cavernous hall in Atlantic City, NJ, streaming in from law enforcement agencies across several states, bound by a powerful sense of fraternity to honor a man many of them had never met.
McGuinn, who was known in the Jessup prison as "Homeland Security" because of his adherence to rules, was remembered for his dedication, commitment and selflessness.
Atlantic City Mayor Robert W. Levy, who has known McGuinn's family for years, told mourners, "Officer McGuinn was unwavering in his belief to do what was right, even if it made others uncomfortable."
